7-sinsI don’t know if I really know what sin is or looks like having not grown up in the church. Having grown up in the “World” I was subconsciously raised with the idea that as long as I didn’t kill, rape, steal, or harm anyone in any real way that I was “all good.” So when I came across 1 John 1:9-10 I was a little baffled on what exactly is sin and what I should be confessing to Jesus.

1 John 1:9-10 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us. (NIV)

Having spent sometime with my Bible study group at Launch ( I cant believe it’s been three years) I have a little better understanding of what sin is compared to someone who is maybe doing this completely on their own. Still, wanting to get a more clear picture of what sin is, I asked around.

Though some had different ideas or beliefs, the basic thesis was the same: Humans see sin differently then God. To God, “sin is sin is sin.” Now that may make some new believers waver. I know I did a little. But here’s the good news:  It’s not about your sin identity. It’s about your new identity in Christ. This made me take a breath of relief as it couldn’t have been said any more clearly than that.

I know as a new believer there are SO many things that I hear and read that just makes me go WHAT???! But I think that if you are truly seeking Christ, He will make his Word clearer and clearer the more you explore and seek Him. If your heart is seeking God, THAT is what He cares about.
