As you’ve well guessed, I’m a bit of a movie nut. I love action/adventures, romances, comedies–you name it. My passion is the 1980’s-1990’s films (they sport the best actors!). One particular series we’re talking about, ranking in my top five favorites, reigned the 1980’s. Starring Harrison Ford, Indiana Jones switched gears from novels to movies–and rather quickly swept the nation; wrangling young boys to become their own Indy, and causing all the young ladies to swoon.

I will admit, Indiana is pretty awesome. Never being allowed to watch the films as a young child, we finally popped one of them in (yes, we still own a VHS) and gazed our eyes upon the phenomenon so many of my college-aged friends were shocked I’d never seen. We weren’t disappointed, and I, the movie-buff, fell in love with Steven Spielberg’s creation. I found Indiana Jones went from a professor with a relatively mellow career to a “whip”-roaring, swashbuckling hero in the span of a scene.

It’s funny how movie characters can lead double lives–they’re hum drum most of the time, but when life throws them a fastball, they don they’re gear and whoosh, they’re gone, a totally new person. They change on a dime, and their side-kicks or “significant others” can hardly tell who they are anymore. They change with their circumstances.

While I watched Indiana Jones rule my television set, I was hit with the idea that people change. Constantly. They never stay the same. I thought it funny that one can never rely on another’s emotional state, spiritual state, or psychological state–they may be “Dr. Jones” one moment, and then be Indiana in the next. If people consistently change and their emotions aren’t reliable, then who do we rely on to walk us through life? To coach us through those hardballs? To guide us through our next Indiana Jones adventure?

I was reminded of Hebrews 13:8, where they author states that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” Jesus doesn’t change. He stays the same. Hebrews promises us that–we can rely on Jesus constantly staying the same. He’s always the Messiah, the King, the Creator. He stays the Ruler of the universe, He stays the atonement for our sins. We don’t have to worry about Him being something different everyday of the week. We don’t have to worry about His opinions on the tough stuff–they are written in scripture the way they are written and won’t change.

Thus, since Christ doesn’t change, we can rely on Him for all our needs. He cares about every little thing in our life, and desperately desires that we communicate with Him. He gave us our tools to get through his life–our “Indy Gear”, you could say. We have His Word, prayer, worship, and the congregation. He didn’t leave us defenseless. Using our “Gear”, we can put our lives in God’s hands and let Him guide us.

Life gives us those Indiana Jones adventures sometimes. We have the choice of either going at them with a Dr. Jones perspective–worried, always second guessing, looking for the “most scientific” or “most logical” solution; more or less, the worldly perspective. Or, we can take anĀ  Indiana Jones approach–love it or leave it, head-first, trusting, bold, and prepared–not fearing the adventure God gives us and always willing to take that leap of faith towards Jesus.

Take Indy’s advice.
